Family Support Services Overview

Huron County Department of Job & Family Services strives to provide programs to strengthen families, protect children, and the elderly. An important component in supporting independent families is to promote self-sufficiency as a way of life. Support services such as assistance with buying food, limited financial aid, getting adequate health care coverage, and child care are all supportive measures to help families in their pursuit of success.

Food Assistance:

The food assistance program, also known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), helps income eligible individuals and families obtain nutritious food. Eligibility is determined by a caseworker based on family size, resources, and income. Food assistance is distributed on a debit card system to be used at most grocery stores.

Healthy Families provides coverage to the entire family and is available to families whose income is at or below 100% of the Federal Poverty Guideline. When family income exceeds the 100% standard, the family may be eligible for an additional 6 to 12 months of transitional coverage. Families receiving OWF are automatically eligible for Healthy Families.

Healthy Start provides coverage to children and pregnant women. Healthy Start covers children from birth through age 18, in families with income at or below the 200% Federal Poverty Guideline. Children in families with income between 150% and 200% of FPG must be uninsured in order to get Healthy Start. Pregnant women with family income up to 150% of FPG are also covered by the program.

Disability Assistance is state and county funded and provides medical coverage for certain persons ineligible for federally-supported public assistance programs.

Medicare Premium Assistance helps those with Medicare who have income too high to be eligible for the Medicaid card. In some cases, Medicaid may pay some or all of Medicare expenses including premiums, partial premiums, deductibles, or co-insurance. Medicare is federally funded and covers persons over age 65 and some persons of any age who have a disability.
