Foster Care:
Foster Care is one of the major components of the child welfare system. Foster homes are certified in order to provide a place for children to live when they cannot safely return to their homes. The goal is to reunify children with their families. Adoption is handled through Children Services without a fee. Many times additional services are available to provide for children with special needs. Children in the foster care system may become available for adoption if it is determined they will not reunify with their biological family.

Child Abuse:
In 2006, 783 reports of suspected child abuse and neglect are made in the Huron County Ohio. Children Services is responsible for evaluating and investigating reports of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse or neglect, and dependency issues involving children. Social workers are on call 24 hours a day and hotline calls can be placed to 419-668-5281 or your local law enforcement agency.

Kinship Care:
Usually the first choice for a child who needs temporary care is with a relative. Kinship Care is an alternative to traditional foster care and keeps some continuity to a child’s life. Raising grandchildren or other child relatives can be a very rewarding experience. There are supportive resources available to help along the way.

Safe Havens:
Not all women who get pregnant are ready to raise a child. Sometimes they see no options. Safe Havens provide an alternative to abandonment of a newborn. It allows a birth parent to leave a newborn baby (less than 72 hours old) with: a hospital, a fire department or emergency service organization, or a peace officer of a law enforcement agency. The parent will face no legal consequences if the child is surrendered unharmed.
